What is the difference between an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) and a Service Dog?

Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities. ESAs provide emotional support but are not trained for specific tasks and have fewer legal protections.

Can I take my service dog on an airplane?

Yes. Under the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines must allow trained service dogs in the cabin. Notify the airline when booking and bring documentation.

Is there a size limit for service dogs?

No. The ADA prohibits discrimination based on the size or breed of a service dog as long as the dog is trained to perform a specific task.

Can any animal be a service animal?

No. Under the ADA, service animals are limited to dogs and miniature horses that are trained to perform specific tasks related to a person's disability.

How do I get my service dog certified?

There is no official government certification required. A service dog qualifies based on its training to perform tasks directly related to its handler's disability.

Do service dogs bark or growl?

A well-trained service dog should generally not bark or growl in public. Aggressive behavior can be grounds for removal from a business.

Can a business ask me to remove my service dog?

A business may ask you to remove your service dog if it is out of control and you do not take action to control it, or if it is not housebroken.

Can businesses charge extra fees for service dogs?

No. Businesses cannot charge extra fees or deposits for service dogs, even if they charge pet fees for other animals.

Is a service dog vest or ID required by law?

No. Federal law does not require service dogs to wear a vest, ID tag, or any special marking. However, identification can be helpful in public.

Can I be asked for proof that my dog is a service dog?

Under the ADA, businesses can only ask two questions: (1) Is this a service dog required because of a disability? (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Can my landlord refuse a service dog?

No. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords must make reasonable accommodations for service animals and emotional support animals, even in no-pet buildings.

Can I take my service dog to a restaurant?

Yes. The ADA requires restaurants and other places of public accommodation to allow service dogs in all areas open to the public.

Does registering my dog make it an official service dog?
